Were they really that young?
Re-watched the SPN pilot today. Ah, the nostalgia.
The little things. Like how Dean taps out when Sam pins him. So familiar with each other, so in tune, in spite of conflicting goals.
Dean has always needed family.
Sam has always been a control freak.
The complexity of the characters was tangible. Sam wanted his independence, wanted a safe life. Not normal. Safe. But at the same time worried about Dean and backing him up and was ready with the chick flick moment. And ready for the re-connect at the end.
Dean hid behind jokes and expressed his care in youthful bravado, but his eyes told the real story.
And John! With wee!Dean and wee!Sam. Oh, John. Mysterious, elusive. Directing the boys to keep up the good fight while he tracks the thing that killed Mary.
And creepy! The creep factor was delightful! And subtle. And the stuff that I noticed that I don't remember! Oh, Show! *flail*
So, so much has happened to these characters. It's like this was another life.

The tap out? I love it! With an unnatural attraction. It makes me think of the boys wrestling/fighting both in training and as two brothers who could easily start pummeling each other.
It's safe and easy and I get the feeling that tap out is as natural as breathing. Sam respects it instantly too, like...okay, game over.
I want to write a fic called Tap Out but don't know what about really.
*deep sigh*
Carry on.

I know! It's such a natural, subtle thing, and I think that's part of why I love it so.
Also? Wee!Dean with wee!Sam. As he's holding him in the front yard, "It's okay Sammy." At four years old, he was trying to reassure Sam.
I think one of the things I like about the old dynamic of the show, in comparison with the new dynamic, is that their conflict was internal, within the family. But in spite of that conflict (and boy, was there conflict!) and the push and pull between them, there was always an underlying caring there.
With the introduction of outside forces like Ruby--who really took advantage of Sam when he didn't have his protector there--things got really rocky and dicey for a long time. They started to fall back into place in the second half of this season, but I'm hoping to see them come out the other side in S7, stronger, independent, and united.

Who would ever have thought that those days of searching for Dad and fighting the odd demon here and there between ghosts and urban legends would have been considered carefree and uncomplicated, eh?
