I don't know anything about the author, and what I've heard of the fandom isn't exactly what you'd call complimentary. (Of course, we know well that it's usually the extreme elements of a fandom that get the majority of the press.) And I really don't know that I want to see the movie without reading the book, though maybe it would be less painful.

It's not on my list of priorities, though, that's for certain. Heh.
