What I'm reading . . .

I'm in the process of reading Logan's Run. How very, very different from the movie. It's the same basic premise, some of the same characters and scenes, but so very, very different. And I can't say that I like one over the other.

For some things, I like the book better. The book goes a little more into the specifics of the society the story takes place in. Otoh, I really like the way the movie changed the idea of Deep Sleep in the book to Carousel and Renewal in the movie.

Otoh, the movie creates more details in other regards. But maybe the book is holding that in reserve as a reveal. So I'll hold off talking about that until later.

I can also see why they opted to make that change. It adds an extra layer that isn't touched on in the book.

One of the biggest differences is the mandated lifespan. In the movie? Everyone gets 30 years. In the book? Twenty-one. Good grief!

Logan is a colder character in the book, at least up to the point I'm at right now. Whereas in the movie, he's more of a questioner who accidentally gets caught up in the intrigue of trying to find Sanctuary, in the book, he's on Lastday, and he wants to find and destroy Sanctuary as a last final attempt at making his life mean something, to be a hero.

There are still a lot of similarities, like Cathedral, and The New You, and the like. But it's interesting to see what they changed and figure out why. (Keeping in mind also that the book was published in 1967, and the movie wasn't made until 1976, so it kind of makes me wonder how much trouble they had adapting it to the screen.)

All in all, an enjoyable read thus far.
