SPN S3 (Magnificent Seven and The Kids Are Alright)
I know I went light on the reviews for S2. There's just so freakin' much there that I didn't have the energy to tackle it all. If there's something specific you'd like to know my thoughts on, just ask.
I'm up to S3 in my refresher viewing, and here's where things really start getting twitchy for me. The whole thing takes a seriously dark turn and the tone goes from cool and creepy to grim and desperate.
Magnificent Seven
This is probably one of my least favorite eps of the series. Not that there's not plenty of good stuff in it, because there is. Brothers being brothers, Bobby has a devil's trap painted inside the trunk of the car, and Tamara promised to be a rather cool recurring character (as did Isaac, but we all know what happened to him).
But the pall over the series is now 2-fold: Dean's deal, which at this point we're still early days and I could totally believe that they'd find a way to get him out of it; and the release of some very, very truly evil stuff.
I think it's fair to say that I loathed the scene where they force Isaac to drink the drain cleaner or whatever caustic fluid that was. There are a few things that make me really, truly angry, and that kind of cruelty is one of them. I realize that's the point; these are demons, and this highlights their cruelty. But having read stories about people doing this sort of thing to their friends because they think it will be funny, I have no patience for it.
I hated listening to Envy when he was taunting the Winchesters and company, and yet, as much as what he was saying was turning my stomach, I was simultaneously delighted, because this was a demon saying these things and demons lie. None of it is true. People are more than the sum of their parts and instincts and urges. Insulting, degrading, and destroying God's creation (and yes, I'm going to go there for a moment) is what demons do.
But it still sickens me to have to listen to it.
This ep just had a relentlessly hopeless feel to it.
And that last exchange between Dean and Sam and Dean being tired and seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, and it being hell fire . . . just . . . *ouch*
On the upside, Jensen is a lot of fun and easy to watch.
The Kids Are Alright
I'm a Dean!girl. Do I really need to explain why I love this ep so much? It brings the funny, it brings the sweet, it brings the poignant. And, okay, it brings the gore, too, but I don't really watch that part. I'm too busy cringing and flailing.
Also, Jensen. 'Nough said.
But watching it now, from the other side of S4, I really miss Katie's Ruby. Dude. This Ruby has attitude. This Ruby has an agenda. This Ruby is self-serving and has an ulterior motive. This Ruby is sharp. I wonder . . . had it always been the plan to kill off Katie's Ruby? Or did they only do that after she landed Harper's Island and asked to be let go? Because I would have loved to have seen Katie play Ruby as she was portrayed in S4. There would have been an extra layer, an inner monologue that I don't feel we got with Ruby 2.0. It would have made things so much more interesting with Sam's story line.
Also also. It seems like they've left some things hanging, even with now knowing that Mary was a hunter (or huntress, if you want to be gender-appropriate). Maybe it's just me, but it seems a little odd that YED would have to kill off everyone who ever knew Mary in order to cover his tracks. Unless someone was getting suspicious and asking questions. There's an untold story there somewhere . . .
Also x3: I *hearts* Dean.
In conclusion: ♥Jensen♥

Maybe it's the reason i like this ep. it's not perfect but i like a lot in it esp seeing it after S4. Also Jensen was great there (as always but still).
Re: TKAA.
This is the scariest ep i ever saw in SPN. I still can't rewatch the beginning with that circular saw *shudders*
And all those creepy kids! Oh, my...
But there was awesome Dean and Ben and Dean with a kid and Liza and her gust and... i think i should stop :)

Magnificent 7? Really not a fav. I mighta like Tamera and Issac better if we'd gotten to know them better. They're storyline felt too crammed. Before we really got to see them groove Issac was coughing up his innards and Tamera had gone heartless hunter not caring if the possessed victim made it through the Exorcism or not (Hello Gordon!) If they'd had another Tamera& Issac episode THEN this happened it might have been more poient. But it was crammed and I think that's why this epi is not a fav. Too much info to absorb all at once. The Deadly Sins are really demons, Dean's not bothered by his deal he's actually kinda happy about it (that'll take a few episodes to work through), Hi Tamera and Issac... bye Tamera and Issac. Hi Ruby! Oh... and you have a knife that'll kill demons Hey that's new! That's a lot for the brain to take in 45 odd minutes. Owie!
