Pondering Sam
Sep. 20th, 2008 07:37 pmBecause I am a hopeless addict fan (will write at another time about how my fannishness is inherited *g*), I've watched "Lazarus Rising" 4.5 times in the past 3 days.
And as I was baking whippersnappers (Cheese Elf? You totally need to try these with the Pixies . . . well, one of the Pixies. There's really only enough work for one), I was contemplating the changes in Sam Winchester.
I'm of the understanding that during the course of this season, we will be seeing and learning both what Dean went through while in The Pit and what Sam was up to while Dean was gone. And it occurs to me that of the two of them, right now, Dean has changed the least. Now, this is probably pretty obvious, particularly since he has no memory of what went on. To him, it was instantaneous. One minute he's a hellhound's chew toy; the next he's waking up in a pine box. He's got four months missing, but his life pretty much picks up where it left off--hunting demons with his brother.
Sam, otoh, has spent four months without Dean, first trying to get Dean back, then hunting Lilith and other nasties alone. He's had the use of a car for four months. He hasn't had to check in with anyone for four months. (Though, Sam, dude, you could have at least given Bobby a call. Let him know you're alive.) If his behavior with "Kristy" is to be seen as the norm, he's taken to random hook-ups. He's having Ruby mentor him. He just . . . this is not the Sam that Dean left behind. This is not the Sam I parted ways with last spring. (And this Sam has kinda Jossed my fic.)
And ya know? Characters have to grow. I understand that. But this? This is a little painful. It will be like Dean has to get reacquainted with a stranger, only this time, as far as Dean is concerned, there isn't a lapse of time for *both* of them to overcome. At the beginning of the series, they'd both been estranged. Now, Sam has had time to change, while Dean has lost that time.
It will be an interesting conflict to watch, I'm sure.

Date: 2008-09-22 06:37 pm (UTC)Yes Sammy has done some changing -- Even with the fabulous hug and the sweet amulet return -- there was a distance to Sam. Could be that even with his joy at having Dean back (and maybe the guilt that HE wasn't the one to bring him back)-- Sam has to be thinking of his actions the past 4 months - and what that would do to Dean -- how he can hide it until he can make Dean see he's doing "good".
Interesting stuff going to happen.

Date: 2008-09-22 07:16 pm (UTC)Oh, I know. I'm just saying that if his behavior is any indication (a la "What did it cost?" "The girl? I don't pay, Dean"), then he's taken to the random hook-up. And the tiger motif in the room? With mirrored ceilings? That's so not the Sammy we knew.
When Dean and Bobby showed up on Sam's doorstep, Sam and Ruby had no reason to be "acting." So right, no random hook-up with Ruby (unless it was a random hook-up with Kristy, then Ruby took possession (which, btw, EWWWW!!!!!). But Ruby's pretty slick what with her immediate role playing, and once Dean was determined to be Dean, Sam went into charade mode, too.
I'm going to try not to have a meltdown until we have a better idea of what's going on. I'll second your "Please, no, Sammy!" in regards to--as Dean puts it--being violated by demon tongue. Even traveling together is icky. I don't like Ruby. I never have.
And I really do need to get back to work. Apologies if this sounds rushed, 'cause it kinda is. Might be back later, but I wanted to

Date: 2008-09-23 08:10 pm (UTC)I think I would have felt more gut-punched by the Sam we're getting this season if it weren't for "Mystery Spot." But having done a sort of "dry run" (or not so dry, actually) on Sam going a little serial killer without Dean to ground him, I was expecting more or less what we got. I was actually a little worried that he'd be even further gone than he seems to be, so...*shrug* It does hurt, but not as much as it would have if I hadn't had an idea what to expect.
That's not to say that I'm not re-watching some of my favorite S1 Sammy eps to patch up the hole where Old Sam was. 'Cause I am.

Okay, whippersnappers.
They are a Pillsbury recipe from 1981, and they are stupid easy.
1 box cake mix
2 cups Cool Whip (that's an 8 oz container)
1 beaten egg
Mix ingredients. Drop by teaspoon into powdered sugar. Bake at 350º for 10 to 13 minutes (12 minutes worked well for me).
They are very cake-like and soft. You're supposed to get 3 dozen from the recipe, but I usually only eke out 2 dozen.

Date: 2008-09-23 09:38 pm (UTC)You’ve just got to figure out the right way to tell Dean about Princess L and your POWERS? Protip: the right way involves saying “yes” when Dean asks if Princess L is alive and if you’re using your POWERS. Saying “no” is the wrong way.
But then Dean totally lied about going to try and throw down with Castiel, so there is that. One episode full of brothers hugging and not telling each other things! Continuing to quote Refur, because she cracks me up:
BAREFACED LIARS WHO LIE BAREFACEDLY IN A LYING AND BAREFACED MANNER, BOTH OF YOU.
Also: I am totally making whippersnappers this weekend! Do you think spice cake mix would work? Or! Oo! Lemon cake mix? I know: both!

Date: 2008-09-23 09:53 pm (UTC)Sam, otoh, started lying to Dean as soon as they broke from the brother hug. Oh, I know, introducing Dean to his "one night stand" Ruby . . . that would put a big ol' damper on the reunion. Then he fails to tell Dean, when Dean asks him point blank, about the powers. As Dean said in "Long Distance Caller" . . . "You really want to talk about who's keeing secrets from who?"
'Cause if we're keeping score, Sam is totally in the lead on this one.
Re: cake mix. Since yesterday was the Autumnal Equinox, spice whippersnappers would totally be FTW. And I always like lemon baked goods. I say both. Go for it!
