This past spring, the flora here in Virginia has been absolutely amazing. I've never seen so many flowering bushes and trees, and our yard was a continuing adventure in discovery of flowers, some the likes of which I'd never seen before. Truly, truly amazing. I asked my Virginia cousin GirlyGhoul if this was the norm, and she assured me that it is indeed.

However . . .

I've never seen such whimpy, anemic corn in my entire life. There ain't no way this corn will be knee high by the Fourth of July (and those of you from the Mid-West know what I'm talkin' 'bout). Truly, as I was driving past some fields recently, I thought, "What is that trying to grow over there? Is that . . . Is that corn? Oh, surely not. It's too small and whimpy to be corn. But . . . wait. Yeah, it is corn." I miss the corn fields of Ohio.

But otoh, we've got day lilies coming out now, so that's really pretty.

Day lilies popped up last month. At least in my part of Ohio. I blame it on a few days of freak summer weather early last month. Tricked the poor babies into waking up early. A few days later... frost warning. Stupid Ohio weather!

Anemic corn, huh. Not many corn fields here in Cleveland, but they're only a quick car ride away.

Virginia is very pretty. I drove thru it a lot when I was stationed in NC.

Ohio misses you.

Re: Ohio corn fields . . . I'm originally from Springfield (actually, just outside of Springfield, in "the county," Clark County). If you go to Columbus, then head west on I-70, Springfield is half-way between Columbus and the Ohio/Indiana border. West central Ohio.

When I was growing up, there was a field that rotated corn and soy beans every other year across the road from our house. And the county roads where I rode my bike had corn fields on either side. My MiL tells me that even Ohio is having trouble with the corn crops this year, from all the rain, I guess. But yeah, I miss it.

The Virginia landscape is very pretty, though it's taking some getting used to not to be able to see to the horizon due to the mountains. But our house has a great view out the back, with the mountains rising in the background, and we've got a lovely front yard. Geo and I are really blessed to have gotten the house we did.

Ohio misses you.

Aw, thank you. :-) As you can probably tell from reading this LJ, I miss Ohio, too.

I know Springfield. My last base before retiring was Wright Pat in Dayton, so I drove thru Springfield on trips home.

I love the Virginia mountains. That was my favorite part of driving from NC to Ohio. I always wanted to do some real hiking there, but never did. Oh well.

Ah, then you know Springfield well. My husband used to work at the Library of Congress nitrate film vaults that were housed at WPAFB until they were moved here to Virginia about a year ago. Now the LoC nitrate collection is kept at the new National Audio/Visual Conservation Center in Mount Pony (yes, inside the mount) in Culpeper.

The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are really beautiful, but driving through the mountains of West Virginia makes me a little claustrophobic. But yes, we have some gorgeous vistas here in Culpeper.

If you ever decide to vacation in this part of Virginia, give me a heads-up. Maybe we could do lunch or something.

The rain's killing the corn! Seriously. Ethanol plants are shutting because the corn prices are headed skyward. Some folks 'round here have had their crops washed out.

::is sad for lack of delicious corn-on-the-cob::

We've been purchasing corn cobs for the bully squirrels in our yard. I commented to Geo that it's not right that the squirrels get corn on the cob and we humans don't this year *is sad*

Glad to hear that you weathered the . . . erm . . . weather recently.
