Born Under a Bad Sign & Tall Tales
Surprisingly, I have nothing to say about this ep.
Why?
Because it speaks for itself. It is awesome and provides us with pretty much anything we could ever want in an ep.
BUaBS
One thing I did notice this time was how the jump cuts and sound bridges in the opening sequence mirror Sam's missing time. (And unsettles us.)
Jared does so love playing evil!Sam, and I think once he let "Meg" show, he had Nicki Aycox's performance down pretty well.
Bobby and the holy water-spiked beer: This is one of the many reasons Bobby is awesome.
And Dean. Oh, Dean. Who will save his brother or die trying. Because offing Sam is not an option.
But why are you sitting here reading me babble? Go watch the ep. It says more than I ever could.
Tall Tales
Still a favorite for the comedy, and a great stand-alone with an entertaining (and potentially recurring) adversary. Sadly, the Trickster also got ret-conned into the archangel Gabriel. I'm sorry, but this entity that kills people for kicks, who acts as judge, jury, and executioner, is not Gabriel. Ret-con fail, Kripke. Ret-con fail.
Not only that, but it's kind of disappointing to have a great character like Loki or Puck or whoever you want this trickster to be, ret-conned out of existence.
Now don't get me wrong, Richard Speight is great here, and in his later eps, and in fact is the only reason I am even marginally willing to go along with the Gabester thing. Because he was willing to do the research. He was ready to go along with a more literarily accurate depiction. And the way Richard plays it, these are two different characters, and I tend to think of them as such.
But this ep? Is a gem. A total and complete stand-alone, and funny. (And I love that Dean's chipmunk face full of caramels was Jensen's idea. Ha!)
Bobby continues to be awesome. The brothers continue to be brothers. The trickster likes the guys except for the fact that they want to gank him.
Also? This was, I think, the ep during which Weekly World News carried an article on the Brothers Winchester completing a hunt . . . in Springfield, Ohio. Which makes me laugh, as that's where I'm from. I wish I could find a copy of the article somewhere.
So, anyway, thumbs up on this ep, and it's still, in my mind, completely separate and a different show from S5.

Tall Tales! Three words: Slow. Dancing. Aliens. Uh huh!
Plus the guys telling their two versions of what happened and how they see each other. It's been done before- but not on this show and it was all kinds of wonderful. Love the opening. They are such BROTHERS! "Do you mind not eating that on my bed?" "No I don't mind! *chomp chomp chomp*" Very glad to be an only child!
I loved the Trickster. I wasn't so upset that he was an angel, if only because he still maintained his Trickster persona... but well, yeah. Why couldn't he just be a Trickster? The show had enough angels. Seems to me if they needed an angel on their side, it could have been Raphael. Though, once they went that way, I was ok with it til Lucifer ganked him. I'm STILL waiting for that to have just been a trick! Show, you can make it happen! You brought back Baby Ghoul Chow, I mean Adam. You can bring back an archangel/Trickster!
I'll be waiting patiently!!

And you know? If he'd been any other angel out of angelology, I think I'd have been okay with it. But they made him Gabriel. Which torks me. But like I said, somehow Richard makes me willing to go along with it. *shrug*
And I think I would have liked it quite a bit if they'd simply left him a trickster.
I'm thinking the ganking was not a trick. And to be honest? It's getting kind of old hat to be bringing back dead allies. We had enough of that in H:TLJ to last us several series, don't you think? Though Castiel has been brought back twice, so who knows.
Oh! I watched "Heart" today. Sam sniffs the coffee Madison hands him. Thanks for point that out to me, now I'm gonna notice it every time Sam takes a drink.
